The other day a friend of mine from High School went out for dinner. I don’t know about when you go out, but thanks to the Internet I can be pretty bad about having to look up reviews about the place I will be going. We originally had plans to go to Logan’s Steakhouse, but after seeing some bad reviews I decided to mention Damon’s.
I chose Damon’s for a couple of reasons. First, my friend had never been there. The other reason was that I had been to Damon’s before when I lived in Dayton. It was always good when we went there, so I threw caution to the wind and suggested that. Restaurant reviews were looked up later and they received mixed, but amusing results.
The reason they were amusing was because of the location of Damon’s. Some websites list it being in Grand Blanc, Michigan and other websites say the restaurant is in Flint Twp. The reviews for Grand Blanc (the better area of the county) complain about wait times, bad service, and substandard food. It made me nervous to go there. The Flint Twp. reviews were a little bit nicer, but still not fabulous. Since they were better though, I decided to ignore them and off we went to Damon’s.
There were some small wait times for some people, but since we were a table of two we didn’t have much time getting a small booth. I would have preferred one of the bigger booths, just for comfort sake, but what we had worked out just fine. Our server was a nice guy who checked on us numerous times, so he got definite points for good service. In fact, he only made one mistake and he was the one that caught it. When we ordered drinks, my friend ordered a Mai Tai and I ordered a raspberry iced tea. I ended up getting a water with lemon, but as soon as he sat down the water he realized it wasn’t what I ordered. Problem was solved soon enough so I can’t complain too much about that.
The ambiance was nice. There is a wall of four big screen televisions in the bar area where we sat. There is another side to the restaurant, but I have no clue what that side looked like since we weren’t over there. Where we sat felt very much like a relaxed bar environment. There was plenty of sports banners and items on the wall. There was dimmer lighting than in the common restaurant, which was nice. Overall, it was the setting that you would expect from a Sport’s bar and grille.
Appetizers came first. We ordered the platter that came with mozzarella sticks, onion straws, chili Thai wings, fried zucchini, and potato skins. The zucchini was amazing. I don’t normally eat zucchini, but this was just firm enough to stay together, but succulent and soft when eaten. The breading was light and everything melded together in the perfect combination of flavors. The mozzarella sticks were amazing, as well. These were done in egg roll fashion and they were filled with cheese. I’d never had them like this, but I was loving them. I can’t get enough cheese so they really fit the bill. I only had a couple of the onion straws, but I ate them without complaint. The big winner was the Chili Thai wings. These wings offer a sweet flavor with a small kick that comes once they have been in your mouth for a minute or two. The biggest disappointment was the potato skins. The reason these failed was mainly because they were cooked too long. They were harder than they should have been and they were black around the edges.
When it came to dinner I had the prime rib (rare) with a baked potato and salad. The salad was a standard house salad with ranch dressing. The baked potato came with butter and sour cream and the steak had au jus with it, as you might expect with a prime rib. I ordered the 12 ounce prime rib, but it was much bigger than I expected so I took home some for Dominick, who is more than willing to accept goodies such as steak. I can be picky about how my steak is cooked, but this one was perfect. It was done just right. It was tender enough to cut with a fork and it tasted delicious.
Kris had barbecued chicken with a tossed salad with ranch, baked beans, and french fries. She loved the barbecued chicken, which was good because Damon’s is known for their barbecue items. She didn’t pay too much attention to the fries and baked beans though that could have been because we pigged out on appetizers and had a salad before the meal. I can’t say I blame her, I know I didn’t make it through my meal either.
In the end, I paid just under $60, which included the tip and we both walked out with a doggie bag or two. The food was great, the service was excellent, and I definitely would recommend checking out Damon’s if you have the chance.
