One of the places that I am pickiest about pizza is in the grocery aisle. Frozen pizza can be an altogether awful experience if you’re not careful. While there are a couple of brands that stand out from the pack, more of them seem to provide flavorless, fat drenched experiences that you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy. That being said, I have been eyeing the California Pizza Kitchen pizzas for awhile now. I haven’t purchased any, but I have been checking them out.
Normally, I shop with hesitation in this area. If I buy a pizza that no one else likes, but me, then I am stuck with it and some normally gets wasted. I don’t want to waste any money, so it’s been easier to sit and wonder if they are worth it or not. Well, that was until they came out with the Pizza for One pizzas. The folks that handle the Digornio and California Pizza Kitchen lines were nice enough to send me a couple of pizzas to check out.
One of those pizzas was the Pizza for One Sicilian. After checking out the entire line I had been secretly hoping this would be one of the ones that they sent. I love pepperoni, but this pizza (on the box, anyway) looks amazing. I had no idea what it would look like out of the box, or taste like even, but the box had me won over from the second I saw it. I was excited to see that one of the pizzas that showed up was the Sicilian and because I hadn’t had lunch yet when it arrived, I decided to pop it in the oven and test it out.
Prep
According to the For One pizzas you can microwave these without problems. The pizzas come in a small container that you can flip over and use as a crisping shield. I’ve tried the crisping shields before (mainly for review purposes). Anyone that has used them realizes that nothing compares to using the oven. Yes, it will take a little bit longer, but within 20 minutes you’ll have an awesome pizza that is well worth the wait. As with any frozen pizza, the prep is a snap. All you do is take it out of the box, remove the plastic, and put it in the oven. This couldn’t be any easier without someone from Kraft coming over to put it in the oven for you.

Taste and Visual Appeal
When I took the pizza out of the oven I thought to myself that if it tasted half as good as it looks then this would be well worth reviewing. The thin crust looked crisp yet slightly flaky, the ham and sausage looked far better than your average variety frozen pizza, and everything came together smelling fabulous. I waited a few minutes before slicing it into fours and once it was cool enough (just a minute or two) I took the first bite.
Frozen pizza is not supposed to taste like this. For one, there is flavor, and I mean a lot of flavor. The fontina, mozzarella, and parmesan cheeses are mixed with fresh oregano and basil, giving the pizza not only an Italian taste, but a kick that stands above any other frozen pizza on the market. Next, there is the issue of the toppings. The Sicilian offers sweet Italian sausage, spicy Capicola ham, and strips of salami. While this obviously isn’t for a vegetarian I couldn’t get enough of it. The sauce was light, but offered the perfect hint of tomato flavor. The crust was light and crisp, offering a nice crunch and some added texture. All in all, this was one of the best frozen pizzas I have had in a long time. I am positive these are worth the purchase now, so I won’t have to stare at them and wonder if my family will eat them. I know they will.
As this is a For One pizza, I thought I should also bring up the size. Whether or not this will fill you up will depend on how much you eat. I was stuffed after eating this, personally, though if you’re not it does offer a nice meal-sized portion and you could add a salad or another side for a complete meal to top off your hunger.

What’s this going to cost me?
You can pick these up at the grocery store for under $4. That is a little pricier than your average single size frozen pizza, but it also is fresher and tastes better. You get what you pay for, and all that. I’ve noticed that coupons come from California Pizza Kitchen quite a lot in my paper, so you can always use those and get them for even cheaper. Either way, it’s worth paying a little extra for these. They are definitely worth the cost.

Is it worth it overall?
The California Pizza Kitchen Thin Crust Sicilian For One pizza is absolutely fabulous. You would have a hard time finding another frozen pizza with fresh ingredients, added flavor, and that splendid bite that comes with the spiciness and that delectable, crunchy crust. If you find yourself in the market, mulling over frozen pizzas, pick one of these up, you won’t be disappointed. Just make sure you get extra for the family. After all, these are just for one, and when you taste it, you won’t want to share.

[...] This pizza reminded me of my past preference for Digiorno. While I had been passing it up in recent years due to my interest in purchasing smaller sizes, I now have a chance to experience it all over again. There are a number of flavors and crust options in the For One pizzas, so I will definitely be checking them out. In addition to traditional and thin crust, DiGiorno also offers some Garlic Bread pizzas in the For One line that I am interested in checking out. DiGiorno offers pretty traditional flavor options. If you are looking for something out of the ordinary for frozen pizza you might want to check out California Pizza Kitchen. [...]
