I’ve come to find that cooking often has its own language. Naturally, there are some terms that just need to be avoided. Most of these terms are made up and some are just ones that get on my nerves. All of these offending words come courtesy of Food Network.
While I love the Network and watch it regularly, there are words that just grate on my nerves. The offenders here are Rachel Ray (I love her food and her personality, but sometimes her words make me want to put her on mute), Sandra Lee (I will get into her later), and Amy Finley (has she been canceled yet?).
Here is my list of the four terms I hope I never hear again in the kitchen:
Nummy – Sandra Lee has mentioned that she was in culinary school, but didn’t like that there were easier ways to do what they were teaching her to do. The reason for this is because they were doing it the right way. Nevertheless, Sandra offers the Food Network and their viewers, little. Her food knowledge is reduced to Knorr packages and McCormick mixes, and while I have no problem saving time when possible, I do realize there is more to life then seasoning packets and cocktails.
Being that Sandra has little food knowledge, the word “Nummy” flows freely in her kitchen. This is the word she uses to describe her food. “Ohhh, its so Nummy.”
While her enthusiasm is nice, she’s not convincing me that it’s good…or normal to put an Italian Seasoning packet that costs 69 cents on Filet Mignon. It’s evil, and they need to cancel her.
Delish – I really like Rachael Ray. 30 Minute Meals is a great idea and the appeal for the non-cook is amazing because her food is quick, easy, and fool proof. However, she has a couple of phrases that just get on my nerves. In the beginning, EVOO was annoying, but I find myself saying that more and more. While I’m still not over the annoyance factor of Yum-o, delish is by far the worst of the coined terms she uses. Delish is a word that I cannot stand. I don’t have a real reason why it annoys me. It just does. Say delicious or something else, it’s only one more syllable. C’mon Rachael! You can work it out.
Sammies – This is another Rachael Ray-ism. It’s hard watching her shows sometimes, because I love her sandwiches, but I know the word is coming and it makes me cringe every single time. Maybe I will get lucky and she will find a new annoying phrase and put this one to bed. Hey, I can dream, right?
Frou Frou – This one comes courtesy of Amy Finley. When Finley was on The Next Food Network Star, towards the end I said I wanted her to win. This was because I couldn’t stand Rory and I felt her lack of food knowledge and lack of respect to the chefs she was working with was not befitting of a winner. That being said, I am ready for Amy Finley to go back to being a San Diego mom and someone not on the Food Network. Self-deemed as “The Gourmet Next Door”, she’s proven she’s not. Instead, she’s dry, boring, and too posh for her own jeans. She uses the word Frou Frou to compare her style to the average chef. While it’s true, the word should be banned…just like her.
