In my second review, I am doing a dual review for two of Volpi’s newest products. Actually, it’s the same product made with two different flavorings. When I was offered Volpi’s wine salami I had to think about it before offering to do the review. Even though I am certain that everyone has the ability to appreciate wine if they find the one that is right for them, when it comes to me I have not found that wine yet. So, I had to consider taking something that I knew that I may not like.
I agreed to do the review because I was curious of the taste and I realized that if I am not a wine fan and they did appeal to me then they might appeal to other people who are not fond of wine. When I received the wine salami they arrive in a thick colored, wrapping paper with the name of the wine on the cover. For white wine lovers you have Pinot Grigio and for red, you are offered Chianti.
I tried both options and then gave some to Dominick because while he is a little more receptive to wine than I am, he doesn’t drink it often. The one thing I was looking for was how powering the wine taste would be, if at all. I am a huge salami lover so I didn’t want something that would take away that pungent, zesty taste. I wanted salami with extra flavor, not a new flavor.
With both options I found them to be incredibly interesting. The Chianti was definitely my favorite. It was full bodied and rich with a hint of zesty kick to it that brought everything together with that strong salami taste. The wine was mild and barely noticeable other than to add the huge burst of flavor. This would be excellent paired with some mushrooms in a salad. The flavor is strong enough to hold its own and it will compliment the other items well.
The Pinot Grigio was a little subtler taste overall. The flavor was enhanced because of the wine and it was not as zesty as I found the Chianti to be. This offered a lighter yet still pleasant taste. While good, I definitely favored the Chianti. I also noticed a slight after taste that left impressions of the essence of wine in my mouth. The Pinot Grigio would work well with fruit and could easily be served with a crusty bread and you could call it a day.
Volpi recommends pairing either wine salami with crusty michetta Milanese, focaccia, polenta, or white pizza. If you are interested in fruit, these would go best with kiwi, blackberry, and pomegranates. Salad would also be complemented perfectly with either of these excellent salamis and if you like wine, you could pair either of these with their inspiration for the perfect burst of flavor.
I highly recommend either type of wine salami whether you like wine or not. If you are extremely sensitive to the taste of wine and want the body but not the distinct flavor then you may want to go with the Chianti otherwise, these are both excellent products that salami lovers are going to adore.
